In a report to Congress, Michael Leavitt, secretary of the Department of Health & Human Services, announced that the Medicare Part D program is ready to implement e-prescribing. The report was based on five pilot projects that tested standards for formulary and benefits, medication history, and fill-status notification. Leavitt also reported that with some adjustments, e-prescribing can also work successfully in the long-term care setting. The Medicare Modernization Act requires HHS to develop uniform standards for the electronic transmission of prescriptions. HHS previously adopted three foundation standards for use as Part D e-prescribing standards, effective Jan. 1, 2006. The department must issue final e-prescribing standards by April 1, 2008.
