Third group of CVS workers to vote for union

On April 10, CVS workers employed at the West Grand Boulevard location in Detroit became the third group to seek representation by the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 876, following a Nov. 2, 2006, vote at the Tireman and Wyoming location in Detroit and an Aug. 24, 2006, vote at the Grosse Pointe location. Mark Charrette, Local 876’s organizing director, said, “Negotiations for the Tireman and Grosse Pointe locations are ongoing. Our main concern is the employer respects these workers’ right to choose representation and not interfere with their efforts as they have in the past.” According to a CVS spokeswoman, “The employees in that store are non union, but we do have union employees in other parts of the company as well as in that locality. About 6% of all employees on a national basis are unionized. The union’s assertion that we have engaged in inappropriate activities in the course of elections in other stores is simply untrue. We’ve done nothing inappropriate in any union election process. We’re committed to treating all of our employees fairly and with respect and we also recognize the rights of our employees in the work environment.” At press time, CVS confirmed that the chain had received paperwork for a petition for an election.
